Facts

Many products are using Star Wars for promotional use. These products have shown a dramatic increase in their sales and are becoming ever more popular with the people. For example,Pepsi, with its collectable cans, have shown a staggering twenty percent increase in sales after releasing their first can. This just shows the amazing power the consumer has on the product.

EPISODE I was shot at Leavesden Studios in England in the summer of 1997. Post-production was completed at Skywalker Ranch and Industrial Light & Magic in Marin County, California. Episode I The Phantom Menace was released in the United States on May 19, 1999.

Industrial Light & Magic's creature shop is universally known as one of the industry's best sources for animal, monster, and other creature effects. While CG creatures have become increasingly popular, many of the alien beings in The Phantom Menace were actually brought to life by actors in masks and costumes built at ILM. The Neimoidians, most of the Galactic senators, and many of the Mos Espa vendors were created in this fashion.

Manufacturing a convincing creature requires several steps, but the process always begins with a basic design stage. A monster builder might develop a creature on paper or build maquettes or small models. Once these prototypes are approved, the creature builders determine whether the monster will be portrayed by a performer in a costume, a puppet, or some other effect.

When a costume is built for an actor, the mask can be augmented by cable-controlled eyes, air bladders, and other features. The actor's movements and body language are also vital to this process. Creatures that require a wide range of facial expressions may warrant a separate, cable-controlled head for close-ups.

Puppets are generally employed for extremely small or large creatures. Puppets of all sizes can be operated from below, above, or even behind the set by puppeteers. In some cases, the puppeteers are actually inside a huge costume. Larger-than-life monsters are usually small stop-motion puppets filmed on miniature sets with high-speed cameras.
